How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Enter each wall, choose a design from our books, and see how many rolls to order. Add every wall in the room, then send the list to us — we measure on site before anything is ordered.

Whiterose Design supplies and hangs wallpaper in Bangkok. This calculator works out how many rolls to order: each wall's width is divided by the roll width to give the number of drops, each drop is cut to the wall height plus 10 cm trim — rounded up to whole pattern repeats for a matched design — and the number of drops that fit on one roll sets how many rolls you need. Walls with the same design share rolls.

How much wallpaper does one roll cover?

A standard 0.53 × 10.05 m roll holds 5.3 m² of paper, but it covers less wall than that: it is cut into full-height drops, and what's left over is offcut. On a 2.6 m ceiling one roll gives 3 drops — about 4.1 m² of wall. On a 2.4 m ceiling it gives 4 drops, about 5.1 m². A patterned paper can lose more to the repeat.

How to measure a wall for wallpaper

  1. Measure each wall's width in centimetres, corner to corner, at its widest point.
  2. Measure the height from the floor to the ceiling or cornice, at the tallest point.
  3. Leave doors and windows in. The paper around them still comes from full drops, and what's left is usually your spare from the same batch.

Wallpaper rolls, explained

How wallpaper rolls are worked out

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Divide the wall width by the roll width and round up to get the number of drops. Each drop is the wall height plus 10 cm for trimming. Divide the roll length by the drop length and round down to see how many drops one roll gives, then divide your drops by that. A 4 m wide, 2.6 m high wall in standard 0.53 × 10.05 m rolls takes 8 drops at three per roll: 3 rolls.

How many square metres does a roll of wallpaper cover?

About 4.1 m² of wall on a 2.6 m ceiling, from a standard 0.53 × 10.05 m roll that holds 5.3 m² of paper. The difference is offcut: the roll is cut into full-height drops, and 10.05 m only gives 3 drops of 2.7 m. Lower ceilings waste less — about 5.1 m² per roll at 2.4 m.

Why does the pattern repeat matter?

On a patterned wallpaper every drop has to start at the same point in the design so it lines up with the next one. Each drop is rounded up to whole repeats and the offcut is wasted. A 53 cm repeat turns a 270 cm drop into 318 cm, which can mean an extra roll in a large room.

What is the difference between a straight match and an offset match?

With a straight match the design lines up level across every drop. With an offset (half-drop) match every other drop is shifted down by half a repeat, so alternate drops are cut half a repeat apart. Cut in sequence from the roll that usually costs no more paper than a straight match, though at some ceiling heights a roll gives one drop fewer. Plain and textured papers are free match: nothing to line up and almost no waste.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

We don't. The paper above and below a door or window still has to be cut from full drops, and what's left over is usually your spare from the same print batch — useful if a drop is damaged or the wall needs a repair later. A wall with no doors or windows can come out exact, with nothing spare: add a roll if you'd like one for repairs.

Why order all the rolls at once?

Every print run is slightly different in colour. Rolls carry a batch number, and rolls from different batches can show a visible change between drops, so order the full quantity, spare included, in one go.

Are mural panels and borders included?

No. Fixed-size mural panels and borders from our books are sold by the panel or the length, not by the roll, so they aren't in the design list. Send us the wall size and we'll tell you how many panels fit — or have a mural printed to your exact wall with Whiterose Murals.

How much does wallpaper cost?

It depends on the collection. We quote wallpaper by the square metre rather than by the roll, with the paper, delivery and fitting itemised separately. Our wallpaper cost guide lists current prices for each range and what fitting adds.
